Can Automated Vehicles "See" in Minnesota? Ambient Particle Effects on LiDAR Systems Status: ActiveProject Start Date: 02/10/2020Subscribe for Updates Summary: As vehicle technology evolves to include more automation, transportation agencies must prepare for the real implications that self-driving cars will have on pedestrians and other road users. These automated vehicles rely on high-tech sensors to detect nearby objects, but some common weather conditions, such as fog and snow, have been known to limit the sensors’ capabilities. In this study, researchers collaborated with a leading tech manufacturing company to test the sensors under a variety of real and simulated conditions. With the results in hand, the research team recommended hardware and data-processing improvements to help automated vehicles “see” better.
