Flagger Operations: Investigating Their Effectiveness in Capturing Driver Attention Status: CompleteReport Date: 04/04/2017 Summary: This project used a driving simulator and field tests to evaluate the impact of new safety devices and sign configurations on driver behavior approaching a work zone flagger. Tests suggest that a dynamic speed display and barrel horn that sounds if drivers are traveling too fast, in conjunction with reconfigured signage, are successful at reducing driver speeds, particularly among drivers traveling at the highest speeds, who are likely to pose the greatest safety threat.
