Automatic Generation of Traffic Timing Plan Status: CompleteReport Date: 10/21/2014 Summary: Traffic signal timing plans generated by algorithms using data collected by the SMART-SIGNAL system reduced travel delays by 5 percent per vehicle on Trunk Highway 13 in Burnsville, Minnesota. Although traffic delays typically increase by 3 to 5 percent annually because of outdated signal timing plans, signals are currently retimed every two to five years due to data collection costs. SMART-SIGNAL's automatic data collection system should make more frequent retiming feasible.
