Estimation of Crossing Conflict at Signalized Intersection Using High-Resolution Traffic Data Status: CompleteReport Date: 04/04/2017 Summary: Red light running is one of the most common and dangerous causes of crashes at intersections. The number of crashes is the traditional measure of safety at intersections, but it¿s not an ideal one because crashes are rare and somewhat random events. Traffic conflicts ("close calls" where one or both drivers must take evasive action to avoid a crash) can serve as an alternative measure of safety. This project developed a methodology for estimating the number of traffic conflicts using data collected by the SMART-Signal system, which is installed at more than 100 Twin Cities intersections. This methodology can help MnDOT identify intersections where crashes are most likely and prioritize locations for safety improvements.
