Assessing the Environmental Impact of Tire Shreds Used Below the Water Table in Road Base FillsStatus: CompleteReport Date: 01/01/2009 Summary: Researchers evaluated the environmental effects of chemicals leached from tire shreds placed below the groundwater table for use as a lightweight fill in wet road bases. They found an increase in surface and groundwater concentrations of various chemicals; metals; and four tire-relevant semivolatile organic compounds, which had a toxic effect on some aquatic organisms.
