Best Practices for Active Transportation Implementation on Rural and Urbanized RoadwaysStatus: ActiveProject Start Date: 05/19/2025Subscribe for Updates Summary: The Complete Streets philosophy promotes the design and operation of roadways that ensure safety and accessibility for all users, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and people using mobility devices. However, incorporating trails and other multimodal facilities into roadway projects can be costly, and many funding sources now require the inclusion of such features. Trail gap analysis can identify locations for connectivity and chart a path for the best timing to construct if desired prior to full reconstruction of the roadway which is often the most cost effective opportunity for agencies to expand the network. To support agencies in navigating these requirements, guidance is needed to determine when multimodal facilities are necessary and to identify the most appropriate types based on specific project conditions.
