Traffic Calming Best Practices Update

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  05/19/2025

Summary:

Traffic calming uses infrastructure to reduce vehicle speeds and sometimes volumes on streets and corridors, supporting the complete street philosophy by promoting safe, multimodal travel. Currently, there are several toolboxes that detail the impact of various traffic calming interventions. This research study will evaluate existing toolboxes and seek new best practices to create an updated toolbox. New strategies/interventions such as linear chicane in urban roadway alignment as used in the City of Winona will be added to the toolbox including effectiveness metrics by updating values regarding anticipated speed reductions and any applicable volume reductions.
