Guidance for Reducing Urban Street Signage

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  08/16/2024

Summary:

In 2010 the LRRB developed the Traffic Sign Maintenance/Management Handbook. The focus of this current project will be to review and update the 2010 handbook with a specific focus on local urban streets and guidance to use the minimum signage that is appropriate to the setting. Signage on streets is a critical part of maintaining a safe roadway to ensure drivers are fully informed of roadway conditions. However, in a densely developed, urban setting with significant pedestrian activity, on-street parking and frequent driveways, excessive signage clutters the right-of-way and can be detrimental to public safety. The MN Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MN MUTCD) provides guidance on signage types, number, placement, and size. Although a comprehensive resource, its focus is more towards higher speed, limited access highways rather than local streets. It requires interpretation and there is often no specific guidance for local urban streets.
