Patching (Asphalt) Best Practices

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  01/26/2024

Summary:

There are numerous resources regarding how to best patch asphalt pavements; however, agencies are often in need of patching a pavement quickly and temporarily. There are several relatively new products being marketed. Local agencies are looking for information on the various materials and methods used for temporary patches. Additionally, some agencies are using mastics for patching. The focus of this study will be to review and update the earlier resources the LRRB developed on asphalt patching (2017 and 2018) and specifically include a section on temporary patching. The section on temporary patching would include identifying the various products being promoted/used for temporary patching (partial list includes cold mix, hot mix, Durapatch, and sand mix, Aquaphalt, UPM, etc.), survey Minnesota local agencies to develop a user database and develop a matrix summarizing the products and identifying which materials and methods are ideal under different circumstances.
