MnDOT developed a new geotechnical design guide based on soil characterization using cone penetration testing (CPT) methods for the efficient design of proposed foundation systems. The guide walks engineers and consultants through the process of using CPT to quantify soil properties and design both shallow foundations like spread footings and deep foundations like steel piling for bridges, embankments and other highway-related structures. The guide, which will be posted online, supplements MnDOT's Geotechnical Engineering Manual with separate chapters covering soil characterization, shallow foundation design and deep foundation design topics.
