A Rational Method of Surface Treatment Selection for Concrete Bridge Deck Thin Polymer OverlaysStatus: CompleteReport Date: 07/26/2018 Summary: Investigators studied the chloride penetration and diffusion coefficients of existing and newly built bridges in Minnesota. Researchers produced a versatile spreadsheet tool that predicts chloride diffusion through bridge decks, allowing engineers to determine the best time to apply thin polymer overlays to protect steel reinforcement bars in decks from corrosion. The tool offers other uses beyond estimating TPO application, modeling future chloride redistribution as a result of milling and placing new concrete overlays. The tool enables bridge deck asset management because it gives the user the ability to see the effects of intervening with a bridge deck preservation project at different times and with different overlay systems. Please note that the spreadsheet will take up to 20 minutes to download, so please be patient.
