Summary:

Drivers' loss of control on curves on Minnesota's rural roads causes many crashes and fatalities. Researchers tested the feasibility of an in-vehicle curve speed warning system, which they developed in this pilot study to function on an Android smartphone. Working with the University of Minnesota's HumanFIRST Laboratory, investigators applied concepts of optimum human factors to develop and test a system that warns drivers in advance of a curve to reduce their speed. The system was carefully designed to avoid driver distraction. The pilot study included a test with drivers on a closed driving course. Drivers indicated that the warning system gave them adequate warning and was not distracting.
