Implementation of a Refined Shear Rating Methodology for Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges

Investigators applied a refined method for assessing the shear load distribution factor of prestressed concrete girder bridges to 50 structures in the MnDOT bridge inventory. They found that the refined approach produces 16 percent higher shear load ratings than current AASHTO methods. Thirty-eight of the significant concrete girders offered acceptable shear strength. MnDOT may apply the new method to another 77 eligible bridges to reassess their shear strength.
