Demonstrating the Potential of OEM Telematics Data for Calculation of Distance-Based FeesStatus: ActiveProject Start Date: 07/31/2024Subscribe for Updates Summary: The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Revenue (Revenue), is building on its previous distance-based fee (DBF) demonstration. In this project they will be working with a leading transportation technology provider to demonstrate the potential of using telematics data directly sourced from a leading automobile manufacturer for the purposes of computing and collecting distance-based fees. By leveraging the advanced technology embedded within all newer model vehicles, data can be directly captured to assess distance-based fees without relying on aftermarket systems, plug-in devices, or third-party apps. The project aims to show how the use of OEM telematics might reduce overhead, enhance equity, and be difficult to avoid. While this model is envisioned to be implemented incrementally, it also recognizes the imperative to keep the motor fuel tax, for the majority of todays vehicles, for years to come.
