TRS: Expedited Process For Developing Specifications on New ProductsStatus: CompleteReport Date: 11/13/2020 Summary: It is common practice for transportation agencies to assert a degree of authority over the products and materials that are used to perform work on public property in an effort to ensure the state’s standards for quality, performance, efficiency or other criteria are met. The process by which products achieve sanctioned use varies, with some states creating formal policies to help regulate the process. To inform possible enhancements to its own product approval process, MnDOT is seeking information regarding the specific policies, processes and requirements that govern other states’ product approval programs. This effort will also provide input into the internal review being conducted by MnDOT’s Office of Materials and Road Research. To gather this information, researchers surveyed departments of transportation from all 50 states and the District of Columbia about their approval policies and practices.
