New Approaches for Roundabout Lighting to Enhance Pedestrian Safety Status: CompleteReport Date: 11/25/2014 Summary: Roundabouts are rapidly gaining in popularity as an intersection treatment across the United States. As the number of roundabouts in Minnesota continues to grow, local road authorities are interested in new approaches to roundabout lighting to enhance pedestrian safety while reducing ongoing energy costs. One emerging approach is ecoluminance, a lighting concept that incorporates light reflected from plants, low-height bollard-based lighting, and retroreflective elements to light roundabouts while reducing power consumption. LRRB was interested in more information about this and other approaches to lighting roundabouts effectively but efficiently to improve pedestrian safety, and more generally in a synthesis of information that could serve as a starting point for review of several topics in roundabout lighting.
