Tack Coat Testing - Measuring Field Bond StrengthStatus: CompleteReport Date: 06/04/2015 Summary: Researchers used the Florida Bond Test to test the bond strength of hot mix asphalt layers of new and existing pavements in Minnesota and to determine appropriate bond strength levels that will prevent HMA de-bonding and the resulting premature deterioration. Based on the tested samples and a literature review, researchers recommend that Minnesota HMA mixes achieve an average shear strength of at least 100 psi, with a standard deviation of 25 psi or less, to ensure consistency across a site.
