Investigate the Effectiveness of Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Technology to Trigger In-Vehicle Messages at Work Zones

Status:  Complete
Report Date:  12/30/2016

Summary:

Researchers developed and tested an in-vehicle messaging system using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags and a smartphone app to alert drivers on their smartphones when they approach a work zone. The app successfully detected the BLE signal from 125 meters away in a vehicle traveling 70 mph. While further research needs to be done to determine how to effectively implement the system, MnDOT hopes it can ultimately improve work zone safety by reducing driver distraction.
