A Synthesis of Usage and Performance of Daylighted Bases in Comparison to Edge DrainsStatus: ActiveProject Start Date: 12/09/2022Subscribe for Updates Summary: Retained water in a base layer can elevate the pore water pressure in the porous media, which decreases the effective contact stresses between the coarse aggregate particles, weakens the mechanical strength and stiffness of the granular materials, increases the susceptibility of the pavement structure to the climatic changes, and ultimately reduces the service life of highways. While drainage is an important expectation from a successful pavement system, lack of information exists about field performance of drainable bases and highway edge drains. This research will document relative and respective performances of various bases when they are daylighted versus when they are enhanced with edge drains.
