TRS: Coordination Between State Transportation Agencies in Multi-State Metropolitan Planning Areas: A Survey of State PracticeStatus: CompleteReport Date: 01/31/2015 Summary: With the passage of MAP-21 and the increased emphasis on performance-based planning, greater coordination is expected between state departments of transportation when a metropolitan planning organization's metropolitan planning area covers more than one state. This Transportation Research Synthesis used a survey of a select group of state DOTs to gather information about how those states address multi-state MPO oversight. Survey respondents provided sample agreements that define participants' roles, and addressed the distribution of federal funds, best practices and any areas of concern identified when coordinating multi-state MPO activities.
