Summary:

Researchers examined the effects of local transportation investment on employment in Minnesota counties. The study used data sets of county business patterns in Minnesota from 1995 to 2010 that included the number of county business establishments, jobs in Minnesota counties by sector and the annual payroll. Linking these data to comprehensive information about transportation expenditures in local and trunk highways in an econometric model, researchers found that long-term local roadway investments contributed significantly to employment rates in Minnesota counties. The project showed that the economic benefit from transportation investment is more significant in rural counties than in urban counties.
