Designing Base and Subbase to Resist Environmental Effects on PavementsStatus: CompleteReport Date: 02/14/2018 Summary: Researchers studied records on Minnesota roadways, subgrades and regions for frost susceptibility and pavement performance, and examined related data from the Federal Highway Administration's Long-Term Pavement Performance program (LTPP). After conducting pavement profiles in summer and late winter and correlating findings with LTPP data, investigators developed a simple design tool for determining the amount of frost-free materials a specific site's subgrade will need to prevent frost and freeze-thaw damage to pavements. MnDOT can select a version of this simple and inexpensive new tool for pilot implementation. Final Deliverables: Report #2018-06 Research Summary Related Materials: Related Research:
