Lightly Surfaced Roads: Stabilized Aggregate Applications

Lightly Surfaced Roads: Stabilized Aggregate ApplicationsStatus:  Complete

Summary:

Researchers synthesized current practice for using light surface treatments on low-volume roads in Minnesota, the United States and internationally. They also evaluated the suitability of various existing pavement design methods for use with LSTs. Results showed that about one-third of responding Minnesota counties had experience constructing LSTs, and most that used LSTs for aggregate-road upgrades achieved their goals of reducing the construction and maintenance costs without compromising performance. Case studies indicated that it was possible to design light surface pavement sections with a reasonable layer thickness, except where supporting soils are weak.
