Summary:

In this study, researchers evaluated the effects of intersection collision warning systems on the behavior of drivers. Researchers found that when active, ICWS installations significantly improved the stopping behavior, gap selection and intersection scanning of drivers; the systems did not negatively affect the behavior of drivers by conditioning them to be less cautious when the systems were absent. Study results revealed that the systems are likely to be continuously activated-and ineffective-at traffic volumes of 1,600-plus vehicles per hour. MnDOT is currently collecting crash data to further assess the safety effects of ICWS installations.
