Sensing for HOV/HOT Lanes EnforcementStatus: CompleteReport Date: 02/27/2017 Summary: This project tested the Honeywell Tri-Band Infrared sensor for use in enforcing high-occupancy vehicle and high-occupancy toll lanes by automatically detecting whether a vehicle is carrying passengers. The system was successful under certain circumstances, but to consistently detect people through windshield glass, it required supplemental illumination at a high enough power to pose a danger to eyes. Without illumination, it was successful in detecting a passenger only once out of 24 attempts. As a result, the technology cannot currently be implemented to assist state patrols in HOV/HOT lane enforcement, although it may be suitable for other applications that do not require additional illumination.
