Report Date:  01/31/2019

Autonomous Vehicle technology is advancing rapidly around the world. This technology will likely revolutionize transportation in the future. Benefits of autonomous vehicles include the potential to reduce crashes, improve mobility for the disabled, and reduce future infrastructure costs. To prepare for this technology, MnDOT is evaluating a potential project to test an Autonomous Vehicle in Minnesota. Phase I of the project is to evaluate the feasibility of testing in Minnesota, identify test areas, and identify costs. Based on the results of Phase I, this project may proceed to Phase II. Phase II, which is not funded at this time, would involve testing an Autonomous Vehicle in Minnesota. Contact person: MnDOT State Traffic Engineer Jay Hietpas, jay.hietpas@state.mn.us.
