Optimized Taconite-Based Pavement Repair Compound and Deployment SystemStatus: CompleteReport Date: 02/03/2020 Summary: Researchers further refined an innovative, quick pothole repair method for both concrete and asphalt pavements described in a 2016 Local Road Research Board study. Taconite repair compounds can be mixed on-site by crews in a 15-gallon barrel. A plentiful byproduct of Minnesota mining, taconite material offers an inexpensive alternative to asphalt and cement, and repairs can be applied to flexible and rigid pavements. The patch appears to be durable, though longer-term evaluation will be required, and mixing methods, quantities and thermal and setting times require further refinement.
