Summary:

Researchers sought to understand how MnDOT and Minnesota city and county agencies could use social media as a tool to increase public engagement in transportation planning and programs. Investigators conducted a literature review, an extensive statewide telephone survey and an analysis of paired case studies of four previous transportation projects to evaluate how social media was used and its effectiveness. They learned that while Minnesotans use social media in ways that mirror national use, some populations would be missed if transportation agencies relied solely on social media to connect with constituents. Social media is effective as one part of a multipronged, dynamic approach to public engagement that must be cognizant of community differences and needs.
