Review of Field Produced Innovative Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

Summary:

Since 2020, MnDOT has piloted the design and construction of asphalt mixtures using a modified mix design called Superpave5. In contrast to conventional Superpave, which specifies 4% design air voids and 8% construction air voids, Superpave5 uses design and in-place constructed air void content requirement of 5%. With several years of pilot projects in service, there is a critical need to review the performance of these projects and recommend the best application for the implementation of Superpave5 across Minnesota roadway projects.
