Best Practices to Deter Beavers, Muskrats and Other Animals from Obstructing Waterways

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  05/21/2025

Summary:

Beavers and other aquatic rodents frequently construct dams and lodges within culverts, leading to significant maintenance challenges. These structures can create serious safety hazards, including roadway flooding and embankment erosion. Several methods have been used to deter beavers near culverts. Trapping is a common approach, but it comes with limitations: it requires landowner permission, the use of licensed trappers (which can cost up to $150 per beaver), and availability of trappers—who are becoming increasingly scarce. Other techniques, such as clearing nearby brush and trees or using visual deterrents like amber lights and high-intensity strobes, have shown limited effectiveness. This project aims to compile a summary of the best practices for preventing beaver dam construction near culverts.
