Leveraging C-V2X and Advanced Communications/Sensing for Rural Road SafetyStatus: ActiveProject Start Date: 08/13/2025Subscribe for Updates Summary: In this project we will explore utilizing C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) communication technology, augmented by 4G/5G connectivity (and potentially also satellite connectivity such as Starlink, especially in rural areas) and advanced sensing (e.g., cameras and LiDAR in critical intersections) to reduce traffic accidents and deaths. We will construct a testbed that integrates various sensors and communication devices, develop algorithms and human-machine interfaces, and implement the system to identify hazards, increase situational awareness, improve traffic management and reduce traffic accidents. This knowledge building proposal will provide an understanding for what safety and operational benefits may be possible in the near future.
