Enhanced Safety of Highway Construction Site using Low Cost, Wearable Sensor Network

Status:  Complete
Project Start Date:  06/23/2023

Summary:

To improve safety outcomes for dangerous highway work zones, this project sought to develop, refine and validate an integrated and affordable Internet of Things (IoT) enabled wearable sensor network. The system’s hardware consisted of wearable alert units for workers, collision detection devices for equipment and intrusion detection sensors for traffic cones. Advanced analytical algorithms used sensor data to warn workers of immediate and proximate dangers. The alert system is monitored through a web-based user interface that offers a real-time view of work zone activities.
